Submission Information

Have a novel you want us to take a look at? Check out our submission guidelines below.

We’re interested in many different genres,

but we do have certain items that we are not looking for.

Please check what each of the head agents at the press

are looking for individually and submit to the correct person (not both).

    1. We specalize in what some call speculative or genre fiction. This includes, but is not limited to, science fiction and fantasy.

    2. Lacuna Lit is an imprint of Blue Feathered Quill that focuses on works of translation, history, folklore, mythology, and language.

    3. Literary fiction that packs an emotional punch is something the press is very interested in.

    4. Graphic novels do have a place at Blue Feathered Quill. However, we do not accept proposal packages for graphic work. All art for a first volume must be within two months of completion prior to submission. We require proof that all art was created by a human artist and did not include the use of AI.

Be sure to look at the ‘About’ page to see what our head agents individually look for in submissions.

  • ●     If you submit to one of our agents, write Submission and the book title in the subject field of the email.
    ●     In the body of the email, give us a synopsis of your book, the story and characters, and any credentials related to writing, such as education, awards, or previous publications.
    ●    Include legal or preferred name(s) in your submission and identifying pronouns. Note any pen names that you use in your works.
    ●     Attach a sample of your book in standard manuscript format. For a standard novel, add the first chapter (and prologue, if present). For short story collections, also attach one story that exemplifies the work as a whole. For artwork, attach an example of finished art that exemplifies the general style.
    ●     If we like what we see, we will ask for a full manuscript. If we see potential in the full manuscript, we may reach out for a video call with the author, or go straight to contract negotiation and signing.
    ●     Anything we recieve beyond these parameters—such as harassment, spam, or incorrectly formatted works—will be immediately rejected.

  • ●     Members of underrepresented or marginalized communities are highly encouraged to submit.

    ●     Be professional. Treat us the way you want to be treated.

    ●     We hope to get responses out in a timely manner, please be patient. If you get a rejection email, please accept it with grace.

    ●     All submissions must be the author’s own creative work, and the author must have all rights to that work. We do not accept or endorse work generated wholly by artificial intelligence (AI).

    ●     BFQ Publishing will maintain the privacy and personal information of any submissions, whether accepted or rejected.

    ●     Please pay attention to when we are accepting submissions, what we are looking for, and who you are sending your submission to. Please do not send one submission to both Alex and Josh. We have different tastes.

    ●     All submissions should be for completed works. Any formatting beyond standard manuscript format is not necessary.

    ●     Please let us know whether your work has already undergone professional editing and revisions (whether developmental, line, copy, or all three).

  • We want to be transparent with you regarding our author contracts. We will never ask authors for any payments. Nor will we refer you to our publishing services if your manuscript is rejected.

While we do not pay advances, our royalty rate is 50/50, meaning the net profit is split, with half of it going to Blue Feathered Quill Publishing LLC and the other half going directly to the author.
We believe this is a fair offer when compared to traditional publishing companies who take up to 70%.

Additionally, we don’t slip in shady clauses that allow us keep the rights to your work indefinitely.

If we find that we’re not suited, you may walk away from our representation with all rights reverted back to you. As authors ourselves, we pride ourselves on being fair to the artists who work hard on their passions.

Submit to either josh@bfqpub.com or alex@bfqpub.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
